What I did find interesting was some of the internet comments that followed after the match. His performance this morning certainly quietened those fans. Say what you want about him selling DVDs – he makes more in a week than most Millwall fans will in 10 years. Dad predicted this when he saw Son play from his Hamburger SV days. Even with my Korean bias, it’s difficult to deny the fact that Son is a quality player. With that said, a hat-trick in any capacity is impressive. Sure, Son is usually a starter for that team and was the Premier League Player of the Month in September 2016. Sure, Millwall play in the third division of English football while Spurs currently sit second in the Premier League. Whenever Son touched the ball, there were cries of “ he’s selling three for a fiver” – a reference to the well-known London stereotype that Chinese people often sell bootlegged DVDs in the area (again, Son is Korean).

Some Millwall fans have a reputation for controversy and rioting. Tottenham played Millwall in the FA Cup this morning. Korea has not seen a player of his ability since Cha Bum-Kun. But ignore all of that. His technical ability is incredible. Right off the bat, his inconsistency leaves a lot to be desired, and he plays for Tottenham. Son is my favourite active Korean footballer. However, recent current events call for a revisiting of the issue. I’ve recently discussed my identity issues with being Korean (both ethnically and culturally) in a previous post, and there will undoubtedly be overlap here.
